Fun Facts: New Dictionary Words 2014
Language is always evolving, and new words and expressions are an important part of this. Four times a year, new words are added to the Oxford English Dictionary.
We've picked some of our favorite new words from this year’s first update. See if you can use any of them when having conversations in English…
Bookaholic
Definition: Someone who reads or buys a lot of books.
Example: Emma is a real bookaholic: She read all of the Game of Thrones series in just one month.
Beatboxer
Definition: A performer who uses their voice to imitate the sounds and rhythms of hip-hop music.
Example: I’m going to see an amazing beatboxer in London this evening.
Food coma
Definition: A state of sleep or extreme tiredness brought about by eating a large amount of food.
Example: All that pizza put me in a food coma. I shouldn't have had that 12th slice.
Bestie
Definition: A person’s best friend or very close friend.
Example: I went to watch the Arsenal match with my bestie. We've been friends for 15 years.
Scissor-kick
Definition: To perform a kick which involve a scissor-like motion of the legs, as in swimming or soccer.

Example: I scored an amazing goal at the weekend - it was a scissor-kick!
Wackadoodle
Definition: Crazy, mad, or eccentric (can be used as a noun and an adjective).
Example: Claire is one of the most wackadoodle people I know, and I know a lot of wackadoodles.
