Word of the week: Woot!

Woot!

Informal. Exclamation.

Definition: Used to express happiness, triumph or enthusiasm (particularly in electronic communication).

Example: There are only two hours left until the weekend! Woot!

The geographic and cultural origins of woot are not clear, but it seems to have come about in the mid-1990s, and started as internet slang. It can also be written with zeros: 'w00t'.

Woot was one of 400 new words added to the 12th edition of the Concise Oxford English Dictionary in 2011.

This dictionary is intended to 'cover the language of its own time' according to dictionary editor Angus Stevenson. Not all words are made to last, apparently, so if 'woot' stops being used it may not be in edition 13!
